Au XIXème siècle, un grand propriétaire terrien s'en va fêter la Saint-Jean, laissant seule au domaine la comtesse Julie, sa fille. Celle-ci, vivant mal la rupture récente de ses fiançailles, est dans une phase douloureuse de son existence. Désemparée, elle se saoule et rejoint les domestiques. L'un d'eux, Jean, la convoite depuis de longues années. Il voit en elle un moyen de monter dans l’échelle sociale et n’hésite pas à tirer parti de la situation.
