La petite principaute de Bergamo quelque part dans le sud-est de l'Europe. La comtesse regnante voit brusquement sa nuit de noces interrompue par l'invasion des hussards hongrois conduits par un fringant et impetueux colonel. C'est ainsi que la belle Angelina se retrouve dans la meme situation que sa lointaine aieule, la dame au manteau d'hermine. Dernier film, fantaisie petillante et remplie d'esprit du grand Ernst Lubitsch qui mourut au cours de la realisation. C'est Otto Preminger qui le termina en respectant scrupuleusement la pensee de son ami.
