Alden dirige une équipe de football aux résultats médiocres. Nostalgique de sa propre époque de joueur, il décide d'adopter un enfant auquel il pourrait tout apprendre. C'est ainsi que Clay, un orphelin, s'installe chez Alden et sa femme et intègre l'équipe. Toutefois, le jeune homme ne se débrouille pas très bien, du moins, jusqu'au jour où il fait la rencontre de Lincoln, un chien intelligent capable de marquer des buts.
