Wendy est une jeune femme ambitieuse qui aspire à devenir architecte d’intérieur. Elle rencontre un homme dans un ascenseur un soir et, lors d'un moment magique, échange un baiser avec lui. Mais elle déchante vite lorsqu’elle s’aperçoit que cet inconnu, Adam, n’est autre que le petit ami de sa directrice, mademoiselle Hall. Celui-ci semble ne pas la reconnaître. Elle décide de l’éviter afin de ne pas compromettre ses chances de faire carrière. Mais mademoiselle Hall doit s’absenter quelques jours suite à un accident et Wendy se voit contrainte de la remplacer. Elle décore la maison d’Adam pour une réception de Noël. Adam se sent irrésistiblement attiré par la jeune femme, qui partage la même passion du théâtre. De retour à Boston, mademoiselle Hall réalise que son petit ami lui échappe et elle congédie Wendy en prétendant qu’il lui a demandé sa main. Effondrée, Wendy se confie à ses amies. Celles-ci décident d’intervenir et grâce à leur aide, Adam déclare son amour à Wendy.
