Au milieu du XIXe siècle, le jeune Hakon Hakonsen voit son père, un marin, rentrer à la maison avec une grave blessure. L'adolescent doit prendre la relève, à contrecoeur, afin de subvenir aux besoins de la famille. Il s'engage sur un bateau britannique où il finit par faire ses preuves face à un équipage expérimenté. Très vite, il se rend compte que le lieutenant John Merrick est un dangereux personnage. Alors que la navire échoue suite à une tempête, Hakon trouve refuge sur une île infestée de pirates cachant un merveilleux trésor... que convoite l'affreux Merrick.
