Un garde-chasse nommé Nathan Bickerman, sa femme Susan et son fils Connor emménagent à proximité du Lake Placid, dans la région du Maine. Pour le jeune garçon, l'intégration est très difficile, il passe donc ses journées à errer seul, près du lac, jusqu'au jour où il apprivoise une famille de bébés crocodiles. Au fur et à mesure des années, l'adolescent nourrit sa tribu de petits protégés, ne se doutant pas qu'ils gagnent en force. Quand les crocodiles décident de s'attaquer aux habitants, Connor et son père Nathan sont déterminés coûte que coûte à les neutraliser.
