Au mois de juillet 1914, dans le port de Naples, le «Gloria», un paquebot, doit bientôt partir vers l'île natale d'Edmée Tetua, célèbre cantatrice, dont les cendres doivent être dispersées en mer. A bord du navire, Orlando, un journaliste, mais aussi de nombreux officiels, des amis de la disparue ainsi que plusieurs artistes. La traversée se déroule paisiblement, rythmée par des spectacles improvisés par les prestigieux passagers. En chemin, le navire recueille un groupe de réfugiés serbes en fuite. Peu de temps après, un cuirassé autrichien réclame ces hommes à l'équipage. L'inspiration fellinienne est toujours là et ce superbe voyage, aux confins du rêve, est une nouvelle facette de l'oeuvre d'un cinéaste à l'inspiration toujours renouvellée.
