Jack Tate, physicien australien brillant mais hors norme, apprend la mort étrange de certains de ses collègues, frappés par un souffle d’air glacial inexplicable à bord de leur navire de recherche dans le Pacifique. Malgré son divorce difficile avec sa femme, Emma, et une relation tendue avec sa fille adolescente, Naomi, Jack parvient à déterminer l’origine du drame. Une éclipse solaire a provoqué une chute soudaine de la température de la mésosphère et une déchirure dans la couche d'ozone permet à de l’air glacial de s’abattre sur terre… Jack entrevoit l’arrivée d’une nouvelle période glaciaire ! Mais lorsqu’il présente sa théorie à la communauté scientifique, on refuse d'écouter sa solution pour sauver la planète. Cependant, de nouvelles brèches apparaissent dans la couche d’ozone et des masses d'air froid frappent plusieurs grandes villes de la planète ! Il faut arrêter le phénomène avant que des millions de personnes meurent...
