Dans le Pays Basque du début des années 50, Ramuntcho et Gachucha s'aiment en dépit de leur différence de milieu et de la haine que voue la mère de la jeune fille à la famille du jeune homme. Désargenté, le jeune homme accepte de devenir contrebandier. Pris sur le fait par le douanier du village, il préfère partir pour l'Indochine en guerre plutôt que de dénoncer ses complices. A son retour, il retrouve Gachucha, réfugiée dans un couvent en son absence.
