Dans la commune de Saint-Landry, la vie continuerait à s'écouler paisiblement, si, en ce printemps 1963, on n'annonçait la visite du général de Gaulle, président de la République. Pour le maire, Alexandre Monjoit, il n'est pas de plus grand honneur. Pour son vieux rival Antoine Dumarcet, unique conseiller municipal communiste, il en va autrement. Car Jérôme, le petit-fils d'Antoine, est, avec la jolie Béatrice, l'un des deux enfants désignés par le sort pour remettre le cadeau officiel. Le bouillant Antoine, dont le général de Gaulle n'est pas franchement l'idole, ne peut admettre que ses idées soient ainsi bafouées. Soutenu par son camarade Fernand, qui dirige la cellule locale du Parti, Antoine va tout entreprendre pour faire échouer le projet. L'honneur familial est en jeu. Celui des communistes tout autant...
