Bobby, un jeune adolescent qui grandit dans une famille protestante très pratiquante, est en proie au doute. Un jour, il se confie à l'un de ses frères : il préfère les garçons aux jeunes filles de son âge. Bientôt, toute la famille est au courant : si les hommes de la maison semblent finalement accepter cette différence, sa mère ne peut s'y résigner, puisque cela va à l'encontre de ses principes religieux. Elle se met alors en tête de "guérir" son fils grâce à sa foi. Mais un terrible événement va changer sa vie et sa vision du monde...
