Ivan est russe, son voisin Assan est kazakh. Ils vivent en voisins dans un petit village kazakh. Quand la femme d'Ivan donne naissance à un enfant brun et étrangement bridé, Ivan suspecte sa femme de l'avoir trompé avec Assan.
Le conflit s'installe entre les deux familles pour quelques années. Ivan se rend chez son grand-père de l'autre côté de la frontière pour découvrir l'histoire de sa famille. Assan disparaît lui aussi aux confins de la Mongolie ; quand il atteint les mers du sud, il trouve enfin la paix. Une chose est certaine, après des générations partagées entre l'amour et la haine, tous sont liés : les russes et les kazakhs, les chrétiens et les musulmans, les Européens et les Asiatiques.
