Les Smith, monsieur et madame, leurs quatre filles et leur fils, coulent une existence heureuse dans leur belle maison de Saint-Louis, dans le Missouri, en 1903. La plus petite, Tootie, multiplie les espiègleries. La plus grande, Rose, attend le coup de fil du garçon qu'elle n'ose pas encore présenter comme son fiancé. La plus jolie, Esther, coule de longs regards curieux par sa fenêtre vers le jeune voisin qui vient d'emménager. Tout en découpant une dinde, le père jette la consternation sur la tablée dominicale lorsqu'il annonce avoir accepté une promotion qui l'emmènera, avec toute la famille, à New York. Une chronique familiale en quatre saisons, racontée avec un sens de la couleur et de la pudeur incomparable par un Minnelli qui signait là sa première collaboration avec Judy Garland.
