Harry Dalton, volcanologue qui, à la suite de la mort de sa compagne, avait renoncé à ses recherches, renoue avec ses anciens collègues de l'United States Geological Survey de Vancouver. Le pic de Dante, volcan endormi dans l'Etat de Washington, présente des manifestations sismiques de faible amplitude. Harry est alors depeché sur les lieux. Il est vite alerté par diverses manifestations telluriques et en avertit le conseil municipal de la petite ville touristique située au pied du volcan.
