Citoyen américain, le docteur Nicholas Pinter arrive à Sofia pour assister à un sommet économique. Confondu avec un agent nommé John Charter, il se retrouve aux prises avec un gangster, Serik Doulova, qui l’accuse du meurtre de l’un de ses amis. Privé de passeport et dans l’incapacité de quitter le pays, le docteur décide de prendre l’identité de John Charter afin d’échapper aux agents des services secrets ainsi qu’aux sbires répondant aux ordres du dangereux Serik.
