Gus est le fils aîné d'une famille de pêcheurs de l'Oregon. Il ne supporte plus sa vie de citadin à Portland et décide donc de partir seul dans la forêt, afin de pêcher et vivre paisiblement. C'est aussi pour lui l'occasion de se remettre en question à ce moment crucial de sa vie où il devient adulte. Alors qu'il décide de se battre contre la détérioritaion de la faune et la flore, il se lie avec les gens du comté et rencontre une belle pêcheuse.
