Un diamantaire se suicide : son honnêteté a été mise en doute par son associé qui prétendait ne pas avoir reçu sa commission sur une affaire de diamants. Son fils Philippe, jeune étudiant en droit, agresse et corrige sévèrement ce maître chanteur. C’est ainsi que le jeune homme se retrouve en prison, partageant la cellule de deux malfrats récidivistes, spécialisés dans les hold-up. Philippe les associe à son projet de vengeance contre cet homme responsable de la mort de son père, et auquel, dès sa sortie de prison, il tient plus que tout à lui en faire payer "l’ardoise".
