Dans son quatrième long métrage, tourné avec un budget modeste, Maurice Pialat regarde, loin de toute complaisance, vivre une bande d'adolescents, fils et filles d'ouvriers, joués pour la plupart par des comédiens amateurs. Élisabeth, Philippe et les autres se marient pour échapper à la famille, puis "montent" à Paris pour fuir la vie conjugale... Ils s'engueulent avec leurs parents, font l'amour entre les corons et parlent d'un futur qui les angoisse. On respire avec eux l'atmosphère étouffante d'une petite ville et on goûte l'amertume d'un avenir sans issue. Mai-68 est passé par là (le prof de philo lit "Libération" et Che Guevara s'affiche sur les murs des chambres), mais l'espoir s'est évanoui. Un film âpre mais non dénué d'humour, qui a conservé sa force et son acuité.
