A la fin des années 90, un million de pilules d’ecstasy ont été acheminées d’Amsterdam à New York par des Juifs orthodoxes recrutés à leur insu. Sam Gold, 20 ans, est l’un d’entre eux. Refusant la voie stricte et balisée que sa famille lui a déjà tracée, il accepte sans hésiter quand son voisin Yosef lui propose de faire passer des « médicaments » contre rémunération. Mais Sam comprend vite la vraie nature du trafic et se laisse happer par le gain de l’argent facile, embarquer dans la spirale des nuits sans fin de Manhattan à Amsterdam et envoûter par Rachel, la petite amie de son patron.
Devenu l’un des dealers les plus en vue de Brooklyn mais renié par son père et sa communauté, Sam est rattrapé par la culpabilité. Déchiré par sa double vie, il va prendre une décision qui risque de tout faire échouer et pourrait lui être fatale.
