A Bordeaux, l'inspecteur Baroni enquête sur la mystérieuse mort de Madame Morlaix, une femme tombée par la fenêtre de son immeuble. Convaincu que son décès n'est pas accidentel, le policier soupçonne très fortement le mari de cette dernière, un comptable ennuyeux. A l'insu de ses supérieurs, Baroni va s'acharner sur le veuf jusqu'à le harceler dans sa vie quotidienne alors que ce dernier le considère comme un véritable ami.
