Le 13 novembre 1990 dans la paisible ville de bord de mer d'Aramoana, David Gray, un de ses habitants prit un fusil d'assaut et tua 13 personnes. Cela demeure le pire carnage de l'histoire de la Nouvelle-Zélande. Alors que les services d'urgence avancent avec difficulté pour atteindre Aramoana, une poignée de jeunes policiers du cru, sous équipés, essayent au risque de leur vie de trouver le tueur. Terrifiés et complètement perturbés les habitants se calfeutrent chez eux pendant près de vingt quatre heures sans savoir où se trouve David Gray et s'ils ne seront pas sa prochaine victime. Ce jour là, il y eut des comportements de bravoures exceptionnels de la part d'hommes ordinaires aux prises avec une situation des plus extraordinaire.
