Dans une campagne française du début du XXème siècle, Raboliot, intrépide et courageux braconnier, est un passionné de chasse nocturne. Marié et père de deux enfants, l'homme voit en cette pratique, pourtant strictement interdite, son seul exutoire. Surveillé de très près par le gendarme Sommedieu, Raboliot ne prend pas garde et va même jusqu'à le narguer. Grave erreur puisque dès lors, les deux hommes vont mener une lutte qui obligera le braconnier à fuir sa famille. Contraint de (sur)vivre dans les bois, Raboliot ressent très vite l'envie de revenir chez lui mais Sommedieu, bien décidé à lui mettre la main dessus, est partout...
