Un vieux cargo, le Habina, de 130 mètres est à l'ancre depuis plusieurs semaines.
A son bord, un équipage cosmopolite, sous les ordres du capitaine Buck et de son second, Maxim, attend désespérément des nouvelles de l'armateur.
Chaleur et mousson, les hommes s'ennuient.
Malgré les ordres de leur capitaine, des marins font monter à bord des femmes dont ils ignorent que certaines sont l'appât qui permettra aux pirates de prendre d'assaut le cargo.
Au cours de la bataille sanglante avec les pirates, Maxim est très gravement blessé...
Consignés à bord par une police corrompue, les hommes commencent leur descente aux enfers, ignorant qu'une femme est restée cachée dans la cale.
