Sur une petite île italienne, dans les années 1950, le jeune Mario décroche un emploi de facteur au service exclusif du célèbre poète Pablo Neruda récemment débarqué sur la péninsule. De cette rencontre naît une amitié renforcée par la poésie et Mario se sert alors du pouvoir des mots pour séduire la belle Béatrice dont il est amoureux.
