Dans un pauvre petit village, proche de la mer Egée, les habitants, des gens simples et laborieux, vivent au rythme de l'air et de l'eau, des soins aux chèvres, de la nuit, des jours et des saisons. Entre culpabilité et colère, trois enfants vont grandir, et leurs personnalités vont se former : Omer, le fils de l'imam, qui souhaite désespérément la mort de son père ; Yakub, qui est amoureux de son institutrice ; et Yildiz, partagée entre l'école et les travaux que sa mère lui fait faire.
