Cédric Errol vit modestement avec sa mère à New York. Petit garçon joyeux et très mûr pour son âge, il a pour meilleurs amis un cireur de chaussures et un épicier aux idées anti-conservatrices. Tout va pour le mieux dans la vie de Cédric lorsqu’un messager arrive à New York pour lui annoncer qu’il est le descendant d’une riche famille anglaise. Son grand-père, le comte de Dorincourt, l’invite à s’installer chez lui en Angleterre. L’accueil est plutôt froid et le jeune Cédric est aussitôt séparé de sa mère. Il doit maintenant accepter sa nouvelle vie, celle d’un petit Lord…
