Ayant acquis une honnête réputation de peintre parisien, un quinquagénaire fait retour aux sources et revient dans le centre de la France profonde prendre possession de la maison de sa jeunesse. Autour de la bâtisse s'étend un assez grand terrain qu'il n'aura ni le goût, ni le talent d'entretenir.
Aussi fait-il appel à candidature, par voie d'annonce locale. Le premier candidat (qui sera le bon) est un ancien complice de la communale, perdu de vue et ainsi miraculeusement retrouvé. Il sera le jardinier.
Le côtoyant au long des jours, le peintre découvre par touches impressionnistes un homme qui d'abord l'intrigue puis l'émerveille par la franchise et la simplicité de son regard sur le monde...
