En 1918, alors que la guerre se termine, des batailles feroces opposent les armees italienne et autrichienne dans le nord de l'Italie. Un jeune journaliste americain, Ernest Hemingway, s'engage dans la Croix-Rouge pour prendre part au conflit. Lors d'une mission dans une tranchee, il est temoin d'un massacre. Il traverse la premiere ligne, un blesse sur le dos, et est gravement atteint par une mitrailleuse. Il se reveille dans un hopital de campagne, sous les yeux d'une belle infirmiere americaine, volontaire comme lui.
